Who is Doug Marcaida?

Doug Marcaida is a martial artist and knife sculptor who has been practicing since 1995. He is the judge on the program ‘Forged in Fire’ and he uses the weapon to practice first before it is used in the show. Although Doug is of Filipino descent, he has an American nationality and lives in Rochester, New York.

Career

Growing up, Marcaida always got into trouble with his peers which often led to a quarrel. His father was concerned about the way he fought and decided to put Marcaida’s energy to good use by taking him to a marital artist class.

At first, Doug wanted to learn Western arts but later became interested in martial arts and how to design knives from his native place, since then he has been practicing martial arts and designing weapons in the Philippines.

Doug’s marital art also gave him an insight to be an expert in weapon combats, he has designed some of the world’s deadliest weapons. He once worked with the US Air Force and has been with the world’s military groups, he also trains people in Filipino martial art-based (FMA-based) combative.

In an interview, Marcaida once said “I have worked with US Force Recon Marines, Spetsnaz Unit Alpha, and the Belgian Special Police to name a few. I am a military contractor who teaches our art to international Special Forces, security, and police units.”

Marcaida encourages learning of ‘Kali'(FMA) and said learning of the skill can save one’s life. He specialises in teaching Marcaida Kali. Concerning Doug’s injury, he went through surgery after a minor injury on his right arm when he was carrying out a test with a weapon. Due to the injury, he could not perform some tasks on the reality show.

One of the things that brought Marcaida to the spotlight is the TV reality show, Forges Fire. In June 2015, a TV station started a reality TV series and Doug’s performance won the audience’s hearts.
