Early Life and Challenges

Steve Harvey was born on January 17, 1957, in Welch, West Virginia, USA, to a middle-class Christian family. Steve, whose full name is Broderick Stephen Harvey, was the youngest of five siblings. He grew up in a modest home with his parents, Eloise and Jesse Harvey. He was actually named after a character named ‘Broderick Crawford’ from a TV show called ‘Highway Patrol.’

Steve Harvey’s father, Jesse Harvey, worked as a coal miner, and his mother was a seamstress. Later on, their family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Steve went to Glenville High School and graduated in 1974. He continued his education at Kent State University and West Virginia University, where he joined the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Even when he was young, Steve Harvey had a natural talent for speaking and communication, which often overshadowed his interest in formal education.

Steve Harvey’s life journey is truly remarkable. He progressed in life doing a wide range of jobs, from being a boxer to working as an autoworker, insurance salesman, carpet cleaner, and even a mail carrier. In 1985, he took his first step into stand-up comedy at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland.

The late 1980s brought a tough period in Harvey’s life when he was homeless for three years. He often had to sleep in his 1976 Ford car when he wasn’t performing at comedy gigs that provided a place to stay. He improvised for showers at gas stations or swimming pools.

In 1990, Harvey’s career took a significant turn when he became a finalist in the Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search. This opened the door to hosting “It’s Showtime at the Apollo” and later starring in the ABC series “Me and the Boys” in 1994. His recognition continued to grow through the WB network show “The Steve Harvey Show” from 1996 to 2002.

One of the high points in his career was the “Kings of Comedy” tour in 1997, where he performed alongside Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, and Bernie Mac. This tour became the highest-grossing comedy tour in history and resulted in the film “The Original Kings of Comedy,” directed by Spike Lee. Harvey’s success extended to television, hosting “Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge” from 2003 to 2005.

Harvey also became known as a radio host, leading “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” since 2000. He made appearances in movies like “The Fighting Temptations” and “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.”

Steve has twin daughters, Brandi and Karli, and a son named Broderick from his first marriage to Marcia Harvey. He also has a son named Wynton from a previous relationship with Shackelford. Marjorie brings three children from her earlier marriage: Morgan, Jason, and Lori. Following their 2007 wedding, Steve legally adopted Marjorie’s three children, solidifying their close-knit family bond.
